178. On Vows Being Up to You
Ven. Master Hsuan Hua
Vows express your own wishes. They are something that you want to do; they donít have to do with anyone else. If you wish to ascend to the heavens, then ascend to the heavens. If you wish to go down to the hells, go down to the hells. It depends on what you yourself want. For example, the beings in the hells right now are there because they made vows to go there. If they hadnít made such vows, they wouldnít be able to go there. Those who become Buddhas are able to do so because they made vows to realize Buddhahood. There is total freedom. You can do whatever you wish, and no oneís wishes will be criticized.
