137.  On the Magnitude of a Celestial Calamity

Ven. Master Hsuan Hua

This potential calamity [Ed. note: the Comet Kahoutek, which was headed for Earth] does not involve only one country; it is a calamity that would affect the whole world. But there are two monks who have resolved to carry on a bowing pilgrimage to pray for world peace. Many people may regard them as stupid and see bowing as a dumb way to act. In actual fact, with that dumb and old-fashioned method they are using, their practice could help to avert a collision with a comet that could destroy the planet.
