the Empty eon, it had no name or form.
Buddha Awesome Sound, a hindrance it has been.
hundred sixty joints connect the body’s frame,
thousand pores pierce its skin.
of the triad of primal forces,
combination of four great elements,
holds up heaven and pillars earth--a spirit magnificent!
cause and effect,
our review of past and awareness of present, we remain muddled,
because of confused attachment to this illusory form.
tire out our parents;
to our wives and children.
vain ignorance leaves behind a trail of karmic debts.
of the Skin Bag,
wine and eating meat confound the mental nature.
desires in greed for pleasure brings ruin in the end.
higher the office, the greater influence and power to oppress;
and selling is cheating people by means of craftiness.
wealth, pride, and excesses--how long can they last?
misfortune and poverty come, all is spent in an instant.
discernment of self and others creates inequality.
harming living things, we treat them as so many weeds.
day our reckoning’s based on ignorance, anger, and greed.
in these perversities, we’re eliminated entirely.
we kill, steal, lust, and lie.
of kin and friends, we’re ravaged by love and hate.
the wind, cursing the rain, deriding the spirits and gods,
understanding birth and death, we’re truly at a loss.
from a cow’s belly,
then enter the womb of a mare.
heads and faces change, who ends up praising and who mourning?
create much evil,
plant no blessings.
vainly we pass from birth and death, toiling all the time.
to the three evil paths:
fall to the hells,
suffer bitterly as ghosts or animals.
sages of old
wagging their tongues,
morning chimes and evening drums, trying to stir our heart
for good and evil are sharp and clear as can be.
awaken us so that we want to leave the five-fold turbidity.
of the Skin Bag,
endowed with form, be not encumbered by it.
an illusory substance, a mere false name-- just a relative dharma.
turn your heart around and contemplate at ease.
not be greedy for fame.
not be greedy for profit.
kin goodbye, cut ties of love, and leave the world behind.
cling to wife,
pine for children.
the door of emptiness.
Receive the Buddha’s precepts.
dhyana, meditate well. Transcend the Three Realms!
your eyes and ears;
and for all wave goodbye to the mundane red dust.
the six senses, cut off thoughts.
the perception of self or others, afflictions cease.
not like the worldly, who sigh at the passing of mist and dew.
robe to shield you,
to fill you—
sufficient temporary support for your body’s needs.
riches and jewels.
lightly on body and life.
them as spit and phlegm, and do not hesitate!
four comportments be clear as ice and pure as jade.
scolded, don’t be angry;
beaten, do not hate.
what is hard to bear. Forget about mockery. Overlook sarcasm.
to winter and summer,
start to finish, hold Amitabha Buddha’s name in mind.
not lapse into torpor;
from getting scattered.
like the pine and the cypress, never withering, evergreen.
not the Buddha.
not the Dharma.
awareness lets us know clearly what we see and hear.
through the paper,
your mind perfectly bright and free from error.
to the origin;
back to the source, retrieve your inherent innocence.
divine potential’s revealed; its wonder hard to imagine.
haven’t toiled in vain.
impacts of your causal ground are finished.
you are known
a Great Hero,
ten titles fit perfectly. You are a teacher of many
The same leaking shell can now manifest
a complete body pervading ten directions!
good and evil distinguished clearly, no more mistakes occur.
why rely on the false alone and fail to practice the true?

wives and riches,
heirs and fortune,

what sort of fame,
what kind profit
I wasted nineteen springs?
thousand matters are not as you wish them to be.
in the world, you’re assailed by hardships constantly.
old, your eyes grow dim, your hair turns snowy white.
no good deeds to your credit, you’ve wasted your whole life!
stretch to months,
reach to years.
vain you lament the passage of time, rolling on and on like
is immortal in this world?
return and bow to the One whose compassion is like a cloud.
the sacred mountains
other sublime places.
as you wish in comfort and ease.
comes swiftly. But do you know? Are you aware?
how much idle, empty chatter do you want to hear?
birth and death.
yourself happy. How many can be like that?
the intent of the lineage.
such endeavors you’ll gain boundless vigor and energy.
plain tea and vegetarian food. Let not your mind be greedy.
the day and night rejoice. Be happy in the Dharma.
rid of the perception of self and others.
away with this and that.
that foe and friend are equal; forget about slander and
no shame or insult.
your mind be as the Buddhas' and Patriarchs'. What are you

with such adversity, we can fall into worse confusion.
even when poor and unfortunate, we can start having good

and reform our offenses. Then our blessings can grow.
to a bright-eyed
birth and death. See the mind. Understand the nature.
through impermanence is what we mean by permanence.
path within the path is found through strong
